Esther Ruiz presents mixed media and neon sculptures and objects in Unearthed, her first solo exhibition at the gallery. The Brooklyn-based sculptor reimagines futuristic landscapes through reflective, pulsating works which create a unique connection between neon tubing, cement, Plexiglas, and paint. These materials engage minimalist elements and transform their surroundings; her sci-fi-like set engages the viewer, challenging our imagination as to what could be.
Ruiz received her BFA in Studio Art from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN (2011). She is the recipient of the 2016 Artist Grant and Williamsburg Studio Lottery from SpaceWorks, and the 2014 ArtBridge Urban Modulations Public Art Installation and Award. Her work has been reviewed in publications including The Washington Post, Art News, VICE, The Wall Street Journal, The American Ceramic Society, Hyperallergic, The New York Times, and on National Public Radio (NPR).
