Artist Talk

Please join us Friday, April 16th at 5:30pm for a discussion with exhibiting artist Sandy Williams IV. Williams will discuss his process, concepts, and the collaborators behind the work in his exhibition Genesis Amnesia: Part 1, which includes both two- and three-dimensional work.

Williams’ work has continually addressed ideas of history, time and agency through works that question structures of power and representation in the United States. With his most recent work exploring the resizing and deconstructing of historic American monuments, the artist’s practice proves particularly powerful and poignant in the context of the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as recording and recounting major moments of social and political change. In Genesis Amnesia: Part 1, each of Williams’ four bodies of work on view—wax monuments, backpacks or Unattended Baggage (Time Capsule) series, sewn paintings, and concrete-filled tanks—communicate a provocative theme. These works, in some capacity, require the viewer to visually and physically engage with them; by implicating the viewer, Williams concretely identifies the way we observe and take part in history.

Sandy Williams IV received his BFA from The University of Virginia in 2016, and his MFA in Sculpture + Extended Media from VCUarts in 2019. He has held teaching positions at VCUarts and The University of Richmond, where he is currently an adjunct professor in the sculpture department. His work has been shown at Springsteen, Baltimore, MD; Guadalajara 90210, Mexico City, Mexico; Public Pool Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, Virginia Beach, VA; Co-Prosperity Sphere, Chicago, IL; New Release, Project Gallery V, and Socrates Sculpture Park, all, New York, NY.

THE LAUNCH PROJECT

Reynolds Gallery invites Richmond artists working in all media to submit proposals for an exhibition in one of the gallery’s upstairs spaces. The Launch Project is a solo exhibition which will spotlight work from one undiscovered contemporary artist in the Richmond community. This program is aimed to provide an opportunity to young, emerging artists practicing outside of the traditional gallery structure who may not have had formal training or representation. Our goal is to help enrich the artist’s career by providing support for artistic professionalism including writing statements, curation, installation, and sales.

The deadline for submissions is 11:59 PM on Tuesday, September 1^st.
Work will be reviewed by the gallery team and acceptance notification will be sent Tuesday, September 15^th.

The exhibition will open Friday, November 6^th with an opening reception from 6 – 8 pm, in concurrence with the downstairs exhibitions.
All shows close Wednesday, December 23^rd

The gallery will only consider proposals by Richmond artists who have not yet held a solo exhibition. All work must be finished and work within the exhibition floor plan shown below.

Reynolds Gallery retains 50% sales commission from the sale of the work. The artist is responsible for arranging the arrival and return transport of exhibited artwork, as well as any framing and production costs. It is understood all exhibition work will remain at the gallery for the duration of the exhibition.

There will be a ticketed VIP Preview Party on Thursday, October 24 from 6 – 9 pm, while the remainder of the fair will be general admission. CURRENT runs Friday, October 25 & Saturday, October 26 from 12 – 8 pm, and Sunday, October 27 from 12 – 5 pm. For full information, please click here.

We’re excited to open a pop up exhibition in collaboration with Emily Mangus Interiors in Roanoke, Virginia. The exhibition opens Thursday, October 17th from 5 – 7 pm at Emily Mangus Interiors, 2109 Crystal Spring Avenue, Roanoke, VA 24014. Poetry Reading

Please join us Friday, October 11th at 6:30 pm for a poetry reading presented by Alison Hall, in conjunction with her current exhibition for the white bird. During the evening, readings will be shared by five Virginia-based poets including Katherine Mooney Brooks, Brandie Gray, Irène Mathieu, Amy Woolard and Annie Woodford.

VCU Libraries: The Life and Work of Richard Carlyon

On Thursday, February 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, the VCU Libraries will celebrate the work and life of Richard Carlyon by hosting a program and art show exploring their recent acquisition of his papers and digital works.
