A street artist known as HENSE to the graffiti community, Alex Brewer pushes color theory and abstraction through collage-like paintings. He layers acrylic, spray paint, silkscreen, and ink on varied surfaces: billboards, blank canvas, cement walls, and creamy white paper. Whether it’s through murals or framed paintings, he allows splashy shapes and geometric lines to contrast and emerge from simple backgrounds. Juxtaposing white backgrounds with neon colors confined within bulky strokes, a crazed energy creates dynamic yet sophisticatedly constrained compositions.
The Atlanta native has executed several large-scale, site-specific commissions across the country, including Madison Theater, Detroit, MI; Wiregrass Museum of Art, Dothan, AL; Apple Inc, Miami Beach, FL; and Facebook Inc, Menlo Park, CA; the public collection of the Atlanta Cultural Affairs office, and the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art in Virginia Beach. He has exhibited since 2002, including shows at the High Museum of Art and Sandler Hudson Gallery; Atlanta, GA. Atlanta Magazine voted Brewer the Artist of the Year (2013).
