Chris Gregson

Color, shape, and weight merge into a greater organic display as Chris Gregson conveys concepts within architecture, mathematics, and personal experiences. Gregson’s approach parallels the work’s patchwork nature; he works on multiple small panels in tandem, loosely establishing color blocks and relations across several groupings. Through a process of layering and removing, the paintings progress into intricate yet unassuming grids, often relating to one another as similar angles and line work communicate across their surfaces. He states, “My open-ended approach can be frustrating because I don’t have a strict formula…what I let in are the impulses feeding my immediate physical, intellectual and emotional world. What I keep out is a planned agenda, signature style and pre-conceived painting formula. For me it is about problem solving and that moment of inspiration.” Gregson graduated from the University of Arizona and later studied at the Studio and Forum of Stage Design under Lester Polakov, and worked as a stage artist at the Julliard School of Music and Brooklyn’s Chelsea Theatre. He has exhibited throughout Virginia, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Washington, D.C., and Italy. His work is held in the collections of the U.S. Embassy, Guinea, Africa; Markel Corporation and Capital One, Richmond, VA.
